Mikä ihmeen 420? Kannabiskulttuurin kansainvälinen juhlapäivä

What the heck is 420? International Cannabis Culture Day

Every year on April 20th (4/20), people around the world who celebrate cannabis culture come together, share moments, and express their community. But where exactly does this special number come from, and why has 420 become the most recognizable symbol of the entire movement?

The origin of 420

The exact origins of 420 are not known for certain, but the most famous and widely accepted story involves a group of California teenagers in the 1970s. At San Rafael High School, a group of teenagers who called themselves "The Waldos" agreed to meet after school at 4:20 in the afternoon to smoke marijuana.

The custom was repeated, and the code "420" spread more widely over time, especially through the Grateful Dead community, and eventually the term became a symbol of the entire cannabis culture. Today, 420 refers to both the time of day (4:20 PM) and specifically the date, April 20th, when the freedom of cannabis use and the power of community are celebrated.

What does 420 mean today?

420 has emerged as an international celebration of cannabis culture. In many countries where cannabis use has been legalized or decriminalized, 420 celebrations take place openly in parks, festivals, and events. It is both a celebration and a statement: on the one hand, a moment of freedom and enjoyment, on the other, a reminder that in many countries, cannabis use is still a crime.

420 in Finland

In Finland, recreational use of cannabis is still illegal, and 420 is not seen on the street scene in the same way as in Berlin or Barcelona, for example. Nevertheless, Finnish cannabis culture exists and lives on. For many Finns, 420 is also a moment to reflect on the place of cannabis in society, to openly discuss its effects, and to dream of more responsible, fairer legislation.

Community and awareness

420 is not just a party to get high. It's also a reminder that behind cannabis use there are a group of individuals with stories, experiences, and goals. Many cannabis users just want to live in peace, use the plant responsibly, and be part of a community where peer support and understanding go hand in hand.

This year, on April 20th, people around the world will light a symbolic candle for cannabis — sometimes in person, sometimes in thought. Responsibly, respectfully, and communally.

Happy 420 Day to everyone who values freedom, responsibility, and awareness.
